Globally acclaimed Cuban pianist Frank Fernandez and Juno Award winning vocalist/guitarist Jack Semple along with Frank's son Ernesto (oboe) and daughter Liana(piano) along with Jack's multi talented family and a special guest performance by entertainer, Rory Allen, will deliver a program that will include classical standards, latin classical, traditional latin and their interpretation of some classic rock/pop which has been described as a mix of jazz, pop and classical. These include songs like - "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", "Hallelujah", "Girl From Impanema" and "Yesterday" where a combination Jack Semple's smooth vocals and commanding guitar and along with Frank Fernandez's almost non-human creative tickling of the ivories creates a sound that leaves one spellbpond.A number of songs that will be performed that evening were composed by Frank and Jack.
THIS CONCERT IS IN HONOUR OF THESE TWO DEDICATED SUPPORTERS OF THE REGINA ARTS COMMUNITY:
Dr. Jacqui Shumiatcher's financial assistance, along with her late husband, Dr. Morris Shumiatcher's, has been a great help to organizations such as the REGINA GLOBE THEATRE, the REGINA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, and the MACKENZIE ART GALLERY. As well, she has been a prominent patron of the UNIVERSITY OF REGINA, the Saskatchewan Federated Indian College (now the FIRST NATIONS UNIVERSITY OF CANADA), and a diversity of groups that include REGINA LITTLE THEATRE, LYRIC LIGHT OPERA, JUVENTUS CHOIRS, the YOUTH BALLET COMPANY OF SASKATCHEWAN, and NEW DANCE HORIZONS. Here is what peers and critics say:
1.Yoshikazu Fukumuru - has conducted over 100 orchestras/symphonies in over 30 countries including the Japan Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic and Royal Philharmonic (England).
"I have only ever seen two people who seem to risk their lives on the passion delivered in every performance - violinist Henryk Szeryng and pianist Frank Fernandez"
2.Walter Norris - accomplished US jazz pianist
" The Cuban concert pianist has that touch that forceful attack on the keyboard I had only heard in Vladimir Horowitz. It is something not human"
3.James Mitchener - Pulitzer Prize winning writer.
"Frank Fernandez started his concert in Havana that night and it is hard to describe the excitement I experienced. I sank deeply in my seat and let the music slip over me and once again I was hypnotized by it, discovering one of the major secrets of art"
4.Joe Couture, - 'Regina Leader Post' music critic:
Those who were there to see and hear the first-ever performance in this country by world-class pianist Frank Fernandez were left blown away by the sheer intensity of a talent which, as other reviewers have said, seems almost beyond the humanly possible.
Each note the acclaimed Cuban elicited from the grand piano was so perfectly rich that a held tone could produce the desire to hold on to it forever.
But many came in rapid jaw-dropping succession that made the dance of his fingers up and down the entire length of the keyboard to be a visual art form in its own respect."
The pinnacle of Fernandez' astounding time on stage came with the absolutely incredible "Suite for Two Pianos," one of the more than 650 works he has composed. The performance was a duet between Fernandez live and Fernandez in recorded form.
The five movements of the masterpiece, the creation of which unfolded over several decades, combines elements usually found in music for the symphony with Cuban and Latin American rhythms.
The work is amazingly unique and showcased Fernandez' passion and sheer brilliance as both composer and performer."
Liana Fernandez
Music - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CzFL5Z9yNs
Joe Couture, - 'Regina Leader Post' music critic:
"Fernandez's daughter, Liana Maria Fernandez, herself a highly acclaimed pianist, opened Saturday's concert with works from Argentine composers Carlos Guastavino and Alberto Ginastera; the Cuban Jose Maria Vitier -- and her father. Her performance was vibrant and intense, her fingers frolicking with incredible speed and precision through the mind-blowing number of notes contained in the series of pieces. Her artistic and technical excellence was especially apparent in the texture with which she delivered the highly diverse themes of the works."
Jack Semple
Jack Semple is one of those rare guitar players who leaves a crowd speechless, one of those players who leaves a crowd in total astonishment, in absolute awe of what they have just experienced. Listening to and watching Jack play fills one with a sense of having witnessed an event in time, one not soon to be forgotten. Jack Semple is a guitar players – guitar player. An absolute virtuoso of his art form Jack plays with unparalleled feeling and total technical control.
Now did I mention the man can sing? Jack has a set of pipes that are smooth as silk and as raw and jagged as rocks cutting through an ocean shore line. His vocal talents alone are an event to behold.
Semple has played from Vancouver to Montreux, has worked for CBC radio and TV, won a Juno award, and shared the stage with a wide range of top artists, from Martha Reeves, Little Richard and The Drifters to K.D. Lang. He was the 1992 national winner of the Much Music “Guitar Wars”. Now, if you can’t get to see him perform near you then I highly recommend getting a copy of his most recent CD release entitled “Tribute to Lightfoot”.
Cuba's Maestro Frank Fernandez when seeing Jack play and then jamming with him said - "I've had the opportunity to listen to and play with some of the finest guitarists in Cuba and the rest of Latin America and he is one of the best".
He starred in the 1994 CBC movie - "Guitarman"
