May 18th (Sunday) - Dog River Howlers Rugby Club's Mike Staffen Day - A Day for Everyone.  Rory will be on hand to lend his support to help create a legacy fund that will bear Michael Staffen's name. The money raised will be used to create a legacy fund with an annual disbursement going towards a community cause yet to be decided but in all likelihood that will be in the area of community sports and education.

Mike Staffen is a well-known rugby player and a former member of the University of Regina Cougars men's basketball team, went into the hospital on April 6 thinking he had mononucleosis only to find out that his health problems were much worse. Within days he was in an induced coma battling lymphoma, kidney failure, septicemia, edema and double pneumonia.

But now, only 11 days after doctors gave the 31-year-old a zero-per-cent chance of living, Staffen is off a feeding tube and is improving every day. "As he was waking up, his mother came in the room, she took his hand and he looked her in the eye and said, 'Mom, I missed you. I love you,' " said long-time rugby coach and manager Karl Fix, who has been at the hospital nearly every day since Staffen was admitted. "Those were the first words out of his mouth."

When Staffen was brought out of his coma, doctors told his family he would likely spend seven to 10 days in the ICU and then move on to the cancer ward. But just two days later, Staffen was out of the ICU and in his own room.
"In his doctor's words, it truly was miraculous," said Fix. "He's not out of the woods yet, but he has come a long, long way.''
Most of Staffen's short-term problems (the pneumonia, etc.) are under control and his lymphoma had been diagnosed as non-Hodgkin's, the more common type of the cancer.
Now family and friends are hopeful he will be out of the hospital in time for a fundraiser to be held in his honour at the Regina Rugby Union Clubhouse on May 18. Beginning at noon, the event will include basketball, rugby and beach volleyball competitions, food and music.

Money raised on the day of the event and donations that come in beforehand will go towards a legacy fund in Staffen's name. In less than 24 hours since organizers began collecting donations, $4,300 had been raised. The money is likely to be used as a scholarship for students entering university. Fix would like to see it go to someone who represents what
Staffen has been through in his life.

"When I think about Mike, I think of the Comeback Kid," said Fix. "This is a kid that in Grade 11 had never played much basketball and barely made his high school team, probably only because he was the tallest kid in the school. The following year he was a city all-star. Now he was written off for dead and he is turning it around. There are other people out there that
might find his story inspiring and need some help along their way. We want (a scholarship) to go to someone that everyone had written off and ends up back on top."

June 14th (Saturday) - Rory Allen and his incredible 11-piece band will be rockin' the town in Moosomin, SK at the Moosomin Communiplex to help raise money for the Fleming Historical Preservation Society for renovations to their grain elevator. Fleming is the smallest 'incorporated Town' in Canada and has a population of less than ninety people, yet they have one of the
finest ball parks on the prairies, including lights, electronic scoreboard, new concessions booth and bleachers, as well as a covered beer gardens area. In fact, they refer to their beautiful Green Acres Ball Park as the 'Diamond of the Prairies'. The Lake of the Woods Milling Company Limited elevator at Fleming is the oldest existing wooden-cribbed grain elevator in Canada. Now
in the process of preserving and restoring the building for the education and enjoyment of the present and future generations, the Fleming Historical Preservation Society have had the elevator cleaned from top to bottom, a major job in itself, windows and doors replaced, the roofs reshingled and the south a 24" metal pnd east walls reclad with 18" xanels that had to be
custom ordered, primed and painted to the original colours of Lake of the Woods. They expect to have the west and north sides, together with the small cupola atop the main part of the elevator completed this spring. When that is done the printing, as it appeared when the elevator opened for business in 1895, will be painted on, completing the project!

They are proud to present Rory Allen in concert to help raise money for this great project - tickets are $20, which includes a dance to follow Rory's show. For more information, please call: (306) 435-4140 or (306) 435-7057. Minors, accompanied by adults, are welcome.
