May 11th (Wednesday) - Press Conference - Legendary Saskatchewan Roughrider fullback George Reed and Special Olympics Saskatchewan invites you to attend an important press conference on Wednesday, May 11th at 10.30 a.m. at Wascana Place (2900 Wascana Drive) in Wascana Park.
Special Olympics Saskatchewan was the first to be given a charter membership in Canada and currently provides programs for almost 2,000 Special Olympians throughout the province. Reed has been involved with Special Olympics since his playing days in the 1970s, and calls the experience “one of the most inspiring and gratifying I have ever been involved with.”
Special Olympics began in the late 1960s when members of the Kennedy family decided the time had come to provide athletic programs for the intellectually disabled. President John F. Kennedy had a sister who was intellectually disabled. Kennedy’s sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was the driving force behind beginning Special Olympics. Founded in 1968, Special Olympics has grown from 100 athletes to 3.1-million worldwide in 175 countries. Special Olympics in Canada was launched by Toronto advertising guru Harry (Red) Foster, who also had a sister who was intellectually disabled. Special Olympics Canada has grown to 32,000 athletes and 14,000 volunteers and coaches.
A number of Saskatchewan Special Olympics athletes will be in attendance at Wednesday’s press conference as will be a number of local celebrities, including Canadian women’s curling champion Amber Holland, Rider legend Roger Aldag and entertainer Rory Allen. All will be available for interviews.

CTV Regina
Date: Saturday Dec. 31, 2011 6:02 PM CST
This year, CTV is recognizing not one, but two individuals for their generosity and sense of community.
The recipients of the 2011 CTV Regina Citizen of the Year are Rory and Lorie Allen.
Rory was born in Saskatoon and lived in several rural communities before settling in Regina. Lorie was born and raised in the Queen City.
Musical theatre brought the two together during a community performance of "The Pirates of Penzance." Their love of music was a key ingredient in the raising of their four children.
Rory and Lorie also use their love of music to give back to the City of Regina. Many residents have seen Rory performing his tribute to Elvis or Lorie singing back-up.
Though they make a living from musical performances, the couple supports many local causes through benefit concerts, including the You've got a Friend Telethon in support of the Regina Humane Society and the Regina Foodbank.
They are also well known and appreciated at Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region Palliative Care Services, where they perform for patients and their families.
Letter from Premier Brad Wall ~ January 2012
Letter from CEO & President of Toursim Saskatchewan - Dr. Lynda Haverstock
